According to industry data and analysts, the demand for remote work and cost savings has led to an increase in coffee consumption at home in the United States, creating a stark contrast to the pre-COVID-19 trend of rising café coffee consumption.

A survey released by the National Coffee Association on Tuesday found that 85% of Americans who drank coffee in the past day did so at home, the highest proportion since 2012.

The survey also revealed that among those who reported drinking coffee outside the home, the majority said they did so at the office or while driving (picking up coffee on the go), with only a small portion indicating they would enter a coffee shop.

Gerd Mueller-Pfeffer, a former Nestlé executive and current coffee industry consultant, stated that the hybrid lifestyle of reduced commuting and financial pressures faced by certain populations are the two primary factors driving the growth in household coffee consumption.

Due to declining production in major producing countries, U.S. coffee prices reached a historic high at the end of last year and remain at elevated levels.

Muller-Pfeffer noted that the third factor contributing to the increase in household coffee consumption in the United States is the quality of equipment.

"Home coffee machines can now produce coffee of restaurant-quality," he said.

Although coffee consumption patterns in the United States (the world's largest coffee market) have changed, a survey by the National Coffee Association shows that the proportion of people who drank coffee in the past day has remained stable at 66%, higher than any other beverage, including bottled water.

On average, American coffee drinkers consume 2.8 cups of coffee per day, which means over 500 million cups of coffee are served daily in the United States.
