Kunming, June 16 (Xinhua) -- At the 10th China South Asia Expo (South Expo) being held in Kunming, Yunnan, the booth at the Myanmar Trade Center was filled with the fragrance of coffee. The premium coffee from the Iwa An production area in Shan State, Myanmar, has attracted numerous buyers and visitors to taste. Yang Zijing, a 29 year old Chinese Burmese mixed race girl, is busy brewing coffee, introducing flavors, and occasionally exchanging contact information with merchants.

Many coffee practitioners used to be unaware that Myanmar also produces specialty coffee, but now more and more people are actively seeking beans, "said Yang Zijing.

Yang Zijing was born into a Sino Burmese family and spent her childhood in both Myanmar and Yunnan. In her memory, coffee was a part of Burmese life. My grandmother also has the habit of drinking a cup of coffee every day

In 2020, after graduating from a university in the UK, she returned to Yunnan to help her mother manage an idle coffee field, thus entering the coffee industry. Over the course of 6 years, she traveled between Myanmar and various parts of China, and operated coffee plantations in Iva Bank, Myanmar and Yingjiang, Dehong, Yunnan, planting more than 800 acres of coffee. Her business gradually expanded to include planting, processing, trading of green beans, and sales of ripe beans, and sold Burmese coffee to Canada, Japan, Australia, Thailand, and other places.

In the global coffee landscape, Myanmar belongs to a "niche production area". In recent years, Yang Zijing has taken Burmese coffee to participate in events such as the Shanghai International Coffee Culture Festival and the Guangdong Zhongshan Burma Cup Testing Conference, clearly feeling that "niche production areas" are slowly entering the vision of the Chinese coffee industry.

During the South China International Fair, the Baoshan Coffee Industry Association signed a cooperation agreement with a cross-border trade enterprise between Yunnan and Myanmar. In addition to conducting coffee bean procurement, both parties also plan to jointly visit production areas in Myanmar to expand cooperation in areas such as planting, processing, and market development.

In Yang Zijing's view, Yunnan and Myanmar are both located in the world's golden coffee planting belt, and the cooperation between China and Myanmar in coffee started from Yunnan, which has a natural advantage. Yunnan has a mature industrial chain and experience in planting and processing, while Myanmar has emerged in the field of specialty coffee with its unique flavor. The two production areas are not in a competitive relationship, but have their own strengths and complementary advantages, which can jointly expand the global market. In addition, the implementation of policy measures such as Myanmar's opening of RMB settlement and the promotion of coffee planting plans in Yangon will open up new space for coffee cooperation between China and Myanmar.

The South China International Fair is coming to an end, and Yang Zijing is walking steadily. After inspecting Chinese coffee equipment companies, she plans to purchase roasting machines, packaging equipment, etc. to be shipped to Myanmar for local coffee processing.

I am proficient in Chinese, Burmese, and English, and am also familiar with the markets of China and Myanmar, "said Yang Zijing, hoping to let more people get to know Yunnan and Myanmar through a cup of coffee, and witness the new story of coffee cooperation between China and Myanmar together.
