What kind of surprises will arise from the collision of everyday fireworks and the rich aroma of coffee? At the Hanqiao Fresh Market in Wuhan, a small stall between two butcher shops and a coffee shop of only 5.2 square meters quietly emerged. The rich aroma of ground beans wraps around the natural taste of the market, and the exquisite freshly ground coffee paired with down-to-earth scallion gifts has made this small shop quickly popular within just one month of opening.
The Hanqiao Fresh Market at 8 o'clock in the morning has already started a lively day. The sound of the meat stall master chopping bones with his knife echoed one after another, and the fresh and shiny pork belly and ribs hanging on the iron hook intertwined with the freshness of fruits and vegetables and the freshness of meat, creating the most authentic fireworks atmosphere. The small storefront of the "June 1st Bean Shop" looks particularly unique here, adding a touch of urban texture to the lively market.
The shop owner Yu Yi is a born and raised Wuhan born in the 1980s. He studied hotel management and has gained experience in several well-known hotels in Shanghai, Zhuhai, and Chongqing. After returning to my hometown, I ran a Japanese food store and worked in the coffee industry for many years. After moving to Qili Temple in Hanyang two years ago, he often shuttled between vegetable markets and wells to experience life. Last December, while accompanying his wife to buy groceries, the lively scene of the market gave him a bold idea: must coffee shops be located in commercial districts or office buildings? Can it be done in the market?
This sudden inspiration did not make Yu Yi blindly start a business. At the beginning of preparing to open a store in February this year, he first searched and researched practical cases of vegetable and coffee shops in multiple places in Yunnan and Chengdu online. Afterwards, it took another two months to visit major vegetable markets in the three towns of Wuhan and conduct in-depth research.
The personalities of people from Wuhan and Chengdu are very similar. They are both easy-going and down-to-earth in their behavior and actions, without so much emphasis. After visiting around, Yu Yi gained confidence in his heart. Hanqiao Fresh is a large-scale and crowded market located in Qilimiao and Rose Street, attracting elderly residents, young families, and office workers from surrounding areas. With a comprehensive customer base, there is a great opportunity to open a store here.
The unique store name "Liuyi Bean Shop" hides Yu Yi's small "selfishness". Yu Yi's puppet cat is named "June 1st", which is a warm companion in his life, and the small shop has specially chosen to officially open on Children's Day on June 1st. In a corner of the bar, there is a small ornament called "Star Man" with a coffee cup on its head, quietly revealing the owner's childlike innocence that has never faded from his heart. The word "bean shop" is the confidence of the small shop's cost-effectiveness - Yu Yi has invested in a friend's coffee bean factory in Chongqing, saving the middleman price difference and making affordable and high-quality premium coffee possible. Customers can either come to the store to drink or choose a pack of their favorite coffee beans to grind and brew themselves.
Affordable pricing is also the key to attracting customers to small shops. A regular cup of coffee in the store costs 10 to 12 yuan, and new customers can scan the code to receive coupons for less than 6 yuan; And the niche specialty coffee that sells for 50-60 yuan on the market can be tasted here for 20-30 yuan. Affordable prices and stable quality have led to a continuous increase in customer traffic in the small shop, with an average daily sales volume of 70-80 cups. During peak customer traffic periods, the daily sales volume can exceed 100 cups. The stall opens at 8am and closes at 4:30pm. I am also the one who checks in on time, "Yu Yi smiled.
The promotional strategy that perfectly fits the atmosphere of the market has added a sense of joy to this coffee shop. Yu Yi has set an exclusive benefit for the store: with a coffee consumption receipt, you can receive a free handful of scallions at the opposite vegetable stall. Yu Yi said he is a "heavy fan" of scallions, so he thought of using the most familiar way among neighbors to get closer. At the end of each month, he will settle the onion money uniformly based on the number of receipts collected by the vegetable stall owners, which is a simple and tacit understanding between neighbors.
A small square store that accommodates a variety of customer flows. Before 9 o'clock in the morning, the frequent customers of the store are mostly office workers from surrounding office buildings and full-time mothers who have dropped off their children. Xiao Hu, who works nearby, comes every day after 8 o'clock to pack a cup of her signature blueberry brownie and quickly rushes to the office with the cup in hand. She says this is the coffee shop with the highest quality to price ratio in the surrounding area.
After 10 o'clock in the morning, young people came one after another to clock in, many of whom came from other areas such as Guanggu and Caidian. Mr. Gao, a post-90s man, came to this coffee shop on Tiktok. Two days ago, he made a special trip to explore the shop. A cup of small citrus made him call Quality Online directly. At the same time, he unexpectedly discovered the "treasure" market of Hanqiao Fresh. The environment is clean, the ingredients are complete, and there are more choices than the small vegetable shop downstairs in my house. "On the day of the interview with Jimu News, Mr. Gao came back during his break to have a cup of coffee and buy some fresh vegetables." I feel that life is very beautiful
The emergence of small shops has broken down age barriers, with both young people following trends and middle-aged and elderly residents trying new things. Aunt Jian, who lives in Shilipu, found this shop through her daughter's recommendation. She said she often takes a walk to Hanqiao Fresh to buy groceries on weekdays and didn't pay attention to this newly opened coffee stall before. I usually drink coffee, but it's my first time at the market. Today, I ordered an American style cup, which is quite innovative, "Aunt Jian said with a smile.
Many vendors in the market have also become die hard fans of the "June 1st Bean Shop". According to Yu Yi, most of the vendors here used to have no habit of drinking coffee. When they saw someone queuing at the entrance of the "June 1st Bean Shop", they became curious and bought it to try, and later became regular customers of the small shop. Coffee is no longer the symbol of petty bourgeoisie that people thought many years ago. It can blend well into everyday life, "said Yu Yi.
Mr. Tan, the owner of the Halal Yellow Beef Shop across from the coffee shop, praised the down-to-earth and delicious taste of the coffee here. The vendor selling crayfish at the entrance of the market orders a cup on the mini program every day. When he is too busy to leave, Yu Yi takes the initiative to deliver it to him. When asked about the fear of losing things in the store without anyone guarding it, Yu Yi spoke in a relaxed tone, "Everyone in the market is doing well. Let's hold hands and take care of each other. Don't worry
For a long time, coffee has been labeled as "exquisite art", while the market atmosphere is deeply tied to the daily necessities of life, and the two seem to have no intersection. But in the Hanqiao market, a small coffee stall broke this preconceived notion. Without fancy decoration or traffic hype, relying on affordable prices, stable quality, and the details of complimentary scallions to "empower", poetic coffee can steadily land in the bustling market.
For Yu Yi, opening this small shop is not just a business, but also a desire to blend two different lifestyles together. The life of Wuhan people is already highly inclusive, as they can enjoy exquisite and elegant afternoon tea in high-end commercial districts, as well as a cup of affordable and fragrant coffee next to the butcher shop in the market. They never have to choose between firewood, rice, oil, salt, and romantic life.
