Qingdao Story - After a 27 year old car accident, a disabled young man in Qingdao opened an accessible coffee shop

At the age of 27, a car accident put Taekwondo coach Zou Yang in a wheelchair. Three years later, this young man from Qingdao opened an accessible coffee shop called "Boundless" in the northern district of Qingdao. There are no steps in the store, the height of the bar counter is lowered, and the legs of the table are slender... Every design hides the ingenuity of a wheelchair. He teaches disabled people, low-income families, and disadvantaged women how to make coffee for free. He said, "Boundless means that there is no boundary between able-bodied and disabled people, and they can communicate freely
Boundless, meaning to communicate freely without boundaries
On July 9th, the sea breeze wrapped in the moisture before the rain passed through the streets and alleys of the old city area. Next to a pocket park in Shibei District, a special coffee shop began to welcome customers. Without fancy design, two wavy lines support five sun like short lines, which is the symbol of "Boundless Coffee", named Spark in English.
'Boundless' means without limits, which was a name that shop owner Zou Yang had thought about for a long time before deciding on. He sat in a wheelchair, skillfully turning the coffee handle, filling the ground coffee powder into the powder bowl, compacting it, and attaching the extraction head. With the low buzzing sound of the machine, the dark brown coffee liquid slowly flowed out, and the rich aroma dispersed in the small space.
You see, I deliberately made the coffee machine stand a little shorter, at a height of 65 centimeters, which can accommodate a wheelchair and allow me to see the coffee liquid. "Zou Yang is the designer of an accessible coffee shop and the first user. He firmly believes that only when he uses it well, other disabled friends sitting in wheelchairs will feel comfortable.
The barrier free design of 'borderless' is reflected in every detail. There is a ramp at the entrance where wheelchairs can slide in directly; The height of the bar counter has been adjusted, making it easy to operate even while sitting in a wheelchair; The passage inside the store is spacious, and wheelchair turning and movement are not a problem. The toilet is equipped with handrails, mirrors with adjustable angles, and a washbasin with legroom.
Even the tables and chairs used by customers are cleverly designed with flat and slender legs, allowing wheelchairs to move forward naturally without occupying the aisle. These designs are not intentionally designed as "special favors", but rather integrated into daily natural arrangements. As Zou Yang said, accessibility is not an extra thing, it should be like this.
But the true meaning of 'boundaryless' goes far beyond the accessibility of physical space. Breaking boundaries and connecting freely "is the core concept of Zou Yang's store, allowing different groups of people to meet and communicate here without barriers or labels. To this end, Zou Yang launched a free coffee teaching program in the store, teaching coffee skills to disabled people, low-income families, and disadvantaged women for free. I hope to help more partners master this technology in the future, so that they can also have a skill and gradually build confidence to step out of their homes
Seeing the confident and cheerful Zou Yang now, no one can believe that three years ago he had just experienced a major turning point in his life, and almost all of the businesses he had previously run were ruined.
From able-bodied to disabled, a life that breaks through reconstruction
Zou Yang is thirty years old this year. If life had followed its original trajectory, he might be teaching Taekwondo to children in a gym at this moment. On weekends, I play soccer and climb mountains with friends, living a simple yet fulfilling life. But in August 2023, a car accident changed everything.
He was 27 years old that year, and a car accident injured his spine, causing him to lose consciousness below his chest and be confined to a wheelchair. The interruption of his previous job as a taekwondo coach was almost a devastating blow to Zou Yang, both psychologically and physically.
At the beginning, it was difficult to accept. The transition from able-bodied individuals to disabled individuals came unexpectedly. But he said, 'People always have to move forward.' In the three years after the car accident, Zou Yang spent a long time re understanding himself and the world. He has tried many things and taken many detours.
One of the special experiences was going to Yunnan to learn how to make coffee. The coffee industry in Yunnan is very developed, and there are coffee shops everywhere in Kunming and Dali, "Zou Yang recalled." At that time, I thought that going there to learn coffee might pave the way. "But his ideals were full, but reality gave him a blow. The development of the coffee industry inevitably brings fierce market competition. For outsiders who are wheelchair bound and unfamiliar with the local area, it is beyond imagination to integrate into this industry. It's difficult for normal people to enter that industry, let alone someone like me, "said Zou Yang.
After staying in Yunnan for a period of time, Zou Yang chose to return to Qingdao. Returning to a familiar place may be more suitable for me. "The turning point of fate often occurs at the most unexpected moment. Shortly after returning to Qingdao, Zou Yang learned through a friend that a teacher was organizing coffee learning and exhibition activities. With a try and see attitude, he went. After going there, I realized that there were already such professional coffee teachers in Qingdao, and I signed up at that time. "Zou Yang's heart lit up because of this.
The days of learning coffee are both fulfilling and dull. Starting from the most basic knowledge with the teacher: coffee varieties, grinding degree, extraction rate, liquid yield... "There are actually not many types of coffee, and the patterns all change based on the foundation," Zou Yang said. "The most important thing is to learn the basic parameters and techniques thoroughly. After learning them thoroughly, every type of coffee can be made
Starting from the end of 2025, his "Boundless Coffee" will officially open in July 2026. It has been three years since the incident, but the time to truly step out, learn things, and do things is very short, "Zou Yang sighed." A lot of the time before was spent adjusting and adapting
Let more people know and understand accessible culture
The process of "adjustment and adaptation" is far more difficult than he has shown. He has experienced every emotion from being able to run and jump to relying on a wheelchair for transportation, from being accepted by the world as "normal" to occasionally being looked at with strange eyes, feeling inferior, confused, angry, and accepting.
Actually, gradually I will realize that what limits me is not my body, but the hurdle in my heart. When I cross it, the world does not become smaller, but bigger. "Zou Yang began to re-examine the meaning of the word" normal ". What is normal? What is abnormal? Who affixed these labels? Many times, 'abnormality' is not a physical condition, but a lack of social perspective and environment. So, Zou Yang took this as an anchor point and made "helping more disabled people adjust and adapt" his wish. If public facilities have ramps, elevators, and accessible facilities, and if each position considers the needs of different groups of people, then the meaning of the word 'disability' will be completely different, "said Zou Yang.
When faced with the question of whether he would feel different from a normal person, Zou Yang hardly hesitated: "I don't feel different now," he paused and added, "There may be a slight difference on a physical level, but from a spiritual and life value perspective, I think they are all the same
This cognitive shift has transformed Zou Yang from passively accepting fate to actively creating possibilities. He no longer asks' why me ', but' what can I do '.
The answer is this' Boundless Coffee '.
For the future, Zou Yang has clear plans. My future goal is to promote a culture of accessibility. Opening a coffee shop is just a small matter, and I want more people to know and understand accessibility, so that more partners can realize their value
His imagined future is a life where people with disabilities can travel freely. Nowadays, many people don't come out and are rarely seen on the streets. I hope to see more accessible people have their own jobs and bravely step out of their homes in the future. He also hopes to tell more disabled people through his own experience that stepping out is not scary. Society is progressing, accessible facilities are improving, and people's attitudes are also changing. The key is for us to take that step ourselves first
