Global Finance: Brazilian coffee exporters temporarily exempt from new US tariffs, still wary of potential tax increases in the future

Source: China Financial Information Network. Sao Paulo, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Major institutions in the Brazilian coffee industry recently welcomed the United States' exclusion of coffee products from the new round of tariffs on Brazilian goods, but reiterated their opposition to the US tariff policy and their vigilance against potential new tariff risks from subsequent trade investigations.
The Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (Abic), the Brazilian Instant Coffee Industry Association (Abics), and the Brazilian Council of Coffee Exporters (Cecaf é) have issued a joint statement stating that the Office of the United States Trade Representative has excluded all Brazilian coffee products from the 25% additional tariff. In addition, unpasteurized instant coffee is also included in the exemption list, which means that Brazil's exports of raw coffee, processed coffee, instant coffee, and coffee by-products to the United States are not subject to the additional 25% tariff.
The joint statement stated that this decision will help protect Brazil's coffee exports, further consolidate Brazil's position as the world's largest coffee producer and exporter, and also reflect that Brazil is an irreplaceable and important partner in the US market.
The joint statement states that this will ensure Brazil's annual coffee exports to the United States worth $2 billion to $2.5 billion. However, some relevant institutions have pointed out that since the United States first announced tariffs on Brazilian goods in 2025, the United States is no longer the largest export market for Brazilian coffee, and Germany has replaced the United States as the largest buyer of Brazilian coffee.
The three institutions stated that they will continue to work together to maintain the sustainable development, product quality, and international competitiveness of the Brazilian coffee industry in the international market, safeguard the interests of the entire industry chain, and respond to possible new trade barriers.
