Global Times editorial: Elon Musk recommends' go to China to see ', hits whose face

Introduction: Musk's post "Go to China to See" has become popular on the X platform, with polarized reactions. The Western perception of China has been torn apart into two worlds - the "real China" seen with one's own eyes and the "distorted China" heard by hearsay. This precisely proves the necessity of 'going to China to see'. The outdated rumors that have been repeatedly hyped up cannot stop the world from approaching China

Elon Musk wrote on social media platform X on August 11th, "China is amazing! I strongly recommend everyone to visit China." His mother immediately responded, "I agree. Every city has its own charm and unique cultural attractions. The streets and buildings here are clean and beautiful, well maintained. In addition, people are both polite and hardworking, and know how to respect others. I feel very safe, so I really enjoy going to China

As of the time of writing, Musk's post has received 2.5 million views in less than a day, and many netizens who have visited China have shared their real experiences in the comment section, such as "I went to China for the first time this year, and it opened my eyes. Technology and infrastructure are very advanced! People are both curious and very friendly, and the food is also amazing. China is completely different from what you hear from the news. But some people in the comment section continue to repeat negative arguments that have nothing to do with China's reality. One post, two reactions, reflect the intriguing reality in the current international public opinion field: the perception of China is being torn apart into two worlds - the "real China" seen with one's own eyes and the "distorted China" heard by hearsay.

Why is there such polarization? We found the answer on the same platform (X). At the same time as Musk recommended China travel, the US Embassy in China once again issued a so-called "China travel warning", fabricating unfounded rumors such as "social unrest, travel risks, lack of privacy protection, and arbitrary detention of foreign nationals" in China. This type of distorted travel warning should be issued every once in a while. When certain Western governments and media take turns to act shamelessly as "rumor mongers" about China, we cannot underestimate the stubbornness of this "false information workshop" and its influence on its audience.

Lies may prevail for a while, but they ultimately cannot obscure the truth. According to data from the National Immigration Administration of China, the number of foreign visitors in the first half of this year reached 22.914 million, a year-on-year increase of 20.4%, of which 77.7% were visa free foreign visitors. The "2026 Global Soft Power Index" released by the British "Brand Finance" consulting firm shows that China's rating has jumped to second place in the world, making it the only country in the top ten to achieve an increase in rating. The recent survey by Pew Research Center has shown a landmark turning point, with a significantly higher proportion of global citizens holding a positive view of China than the United States.

More and more ordinary people are breaking away from the single narrative of Western media and establishing objective cognition through personal travel. The vivid China that tourists crossing mountains and seas see with their own eyes is like this: the streets remain safe and secure at night, a mobile phone provides digital convenience for clothing, food, housing, and transportation, covering a wide range of public cooling spaces and stable power supply, creating a diverse living scene that combines traditional charm with cutting-edge technology. The "Chinese style sense of security" has become a hot topic on overseas social media platforms, with scenes such as unmanned shops and smooth retrieval of lost items shattering the lies spoken by the US.

The polarized discussion sparked by Musk's post precisely proves the necessity of "going to China to see". The continuous output of distorted travel warnings by the US is essentially due to the fear that its own people will see the real China and expose its long-term negative narrative. Many American elites, knowing that China's society is stable and people's lives are peaceful, witness the prosperity and convenience of people's livelihoods, but after returning home, they still intensify their smearing. The root cause lies in their need to maintain a 'dangerous China' narrative to serve domestic political agendas and geopolitical game demands. If prejudice is assumed, even if one travels throughout China, it is difficult to see the truth; To understand the development and temperature of this land, one must set aside their inherent prejudices and observe it with a level eye.

Fortunately, the voice of "tap water" among the people has long transcended the boundaries of Western public opinion manipulation. From "China Travel" to "China Cool", from "Becoming Chinese" to "Chinamaxxing", young people around the world actively approach daily life in China and take the initiative to shoot short videos to spread their true experiences. Without promotional packaging or verbal guidance, relying solely on personal experiences to impress global netizens, unfiltered daily images are gradually breaking down the decades long one-sided "stereotype" of China instilled by Western media, becoming a powerful tool to break through the "information cocoon".

Musk's suggestion of "going to China to see" is simple but hits the nail on the head. The outdated rumors that have been repeatedly hyped up cannot stop the world from approaching China. We look forward to more overseas people letting go of their preconceived biases and personally stepping onto this open and inclusive land to see a real, three-dimensional, and comprehensive China.
