(Economic Observation) The Chinese coffee market continues to rise, and Hainan may become a new channel for global coffee to enter China

Haikou, August 15th (Xinhua) -- "China's huge consumer group will lead the coffee industry to shift its focus to Asia and China," said Zhang Hong, President of the Asian Coffee Association, at the 2026 Hainan International Coffee Expo held in Haikou. He believes that Hainan Free Trade Port has unique geographical advantages, an open policy system, and a profound coffee culture, and is expected to become an Eastern coffee port that radiates Asia and connects the world.

Zhang Hong introduced that Asia has nearly 60% of the world's population, and its coffee consumption growth rate is 4 to 5 times that of other regions. He previously stated that the annual consumption scale of China's coffee terminal market has exceeded 200 billion yuan, and is increasing at a rate of about 20% per year, which is about 10 times the world average. This high-speed compound growth rate can be maintained for at least 5 to 10 years.
This judgment is confirmed in the trade data of major coffee bean exporting countries.
As the birthplace of Arabica coffee, Ethiopia ranked seventh among its coffee export destinations two years ago, but rose to fifth place in the 2024/25 fiscal year. In the fiscal year 2025/26, China has jumped to become the third largest export market, second only to Saudi Arabia and Germany. Its coffee exports to China reached 47836 tons, with an export value of 347 million US dollars, an increase of about 40% and 58% year-on-year, respectively.
The rise of Chinese coffee culture has brought many new opportunities to Ethiopia, "said Aziza Galetta, Deputy Director of the Ethiopian Embassy in China. This has better connected Ethiopia's coffee origin with China's innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and consumer taste.
Colombia also feels the heat of the Chinese market. Oscar Plata, Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy of Colombia in China, told China News Agency that in the past four years, China's imports of Colombian coffee have increased by about 105%.
The most important agricultural product in Colombia is coffee, so a large part of my work in China is related to coffee, "said Oscar Plata. Coffee can become an important platform for cooperation between China and Colombia in various fields such as agricultural research, climate adaptive agriculture, and technological innovation.
At present, the main channels for global coffee to enter the Chinese market are concentrated in eastern ports such as Shanghai, and the unique policies of Hainan Free Trade Port are opening up a new channel.
Starting from 2025, categories such as unbaked coffee will be included in the "zero tariff" list of raw materials for Hainan Free Trade Port. Enterprises importing coffee beans will be exempt from tariffs, import value-added tax, and consumption tax; Products with a processing value-added of over 30% (inclusive) entering the mainland market through the "second tier" can also be exempted from import tariffs.
Oscar Plata told the China News Service reporter that one of the important tasks of his trip to participate in the Hainan International Coffee Expo is to understand the details of relevant policies and find new entry points for Colombian coffee into the Chinese market.
Zhang Hong said that the Asian Coffee Association plans to attract all member units to settle in Hainan Free Trade Port, rely on characteristic industry policies, improve the entire coffee industry chain, and promote the long-term development of the
