Recently, at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development event in Geneva, an article titled "Serving the People in a Cup of Coffee" written by People's Daily Online was promoted. The content of the article and a printed version of the People's Daily Online website were distributed to attendees for reading, attracting international attention. Kiyoshi Adachi, Director of the Intellectual Property Unit of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and current official of the Bangladesh office, specially took a photo with articles from People's Daily Online and Yunnan Menglian Coffee as a memento.

Little coffee beans have already formed an inseparable bond with the United Nations. In May 2021, Ambassador Zhang Jun, the then Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, presented coffee beans produced in Menglian Dai, Lahu, and Va Autonomous County as a special gift to representatives of Security Council member states. These coffee beans, carefully cultivated by the wealthy leader Ye Ping and various ethnic coffee farmers, symbolize the fruitful achievements of China's poverty alleviation campaign and are a vivid epitome of rural revitalization.

Nowadays, as the "number one county for premium coffee in China", Menglian relies on its unique geographical and climatic conditions to deeply cultivate the coffee specialty industry. With technological support and industrial cultivation, it has turned deep mountain coffee beans into "golden beans" for ordinary people to increase their income and become prosperous. The transformation of Manshan Coffee Park is the most vivid portrayal of the reality of "serving the people". The development of the industry benefits thousands of ordinary people and truly enhances the well-being of the people in the border areas.

From diplomatic gifts from the Security Council to the "Serve the People" article co hosted with People's Daily Online at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva, Menglian Coffee not only continues the warm friendship from the Chinese border, but also showcases the continuous dissemination and deep expression of China's grassroots development story on the international stage.

Serving the People in a Cup of Coffee

The morning light falls on a coffee shop in Menglian County, Yunnan Province. Zhao Hua, a Wa girl, stood behind the bar, carefully making a cup of hand brewed coffee.

Zhao Hua's parents were one of the earliest coffee growers in the area. My dad has been growing coffee all his life, but he can't bear to drink it himself. He doesn't know where these bitter coffee beans end up, he only knows that someone will come to collect them and exchange them for money

Zhao Hua's coffee shop is now one of the most popular shops on the boutique coffee street of Menglian. Her short videos have made more and more people aware of this small border town and its coffee. The coffee beans have also been exported to overseas markets such as Japan and Australia through suppliers. It's different now. Our generation has truly tasted the sweetness of coffee, "she said with a smile.

From "bitter coffee beans" to "a sweet cup of coffee", behind the change in taste is the fate of a border town.

Menglian, in Dai language, means "a good place to find". The connection between this small southwestern border town and coffee began in 1958, and its large-scale promotion began in the 1980s. Li Meiying, director of the Tea and Characteristic Biotechnology Industry Development Center in Menglian County, still remembers when she was a child, on her way to school, officials and people worked together in the fields. The long terrace was dug out with hoes, and coffee seedlings were planted one by one. Nowadays, looking around, there are coffee gardens all over the mountains and fields.

Zhao Hua's father was one of the coffee farmers who opened the terrace with the officials back then. Decades later, his daughter returned to Menglian to start her own business, and it was Li Meiying, the successor of those cadres at that time, who extended a helping hand.

When I was a child, I watched the older generation of cadres planting coffee on the field with everyone. Now, I take my hometown's coffee out, which is a kind of inheritance, "said Li Meiying. From the fields to exhibitions, from planting coffee with the masses to helping young people sell coffee, the lives of two generations are different, but they carry the same thing in their hearts.

When Menglian Coffee Boutique Street first opened in April 2023, coffee farmers and shop owners were unsure. Li Meiying and her colleagues went to help look after the store and entertain guests after work. At that time, business was not very good, but Zhao Hua and her sister handed over the key to the store to Li Meiying, saying, "I'll leave the key to you, I can rest assured." Even now, Li Meiying still carries this key.

Later, Zhao Hua and his sister opened a reservoir coffee shop in the mountains. As the business was just starting, Li Meiying and her colleagues often went to lend a hand. Zhao Hua recalled, "During those months, government leaders came every day to coordinate work, from the laying of roads and water and electricity pipelines to the construction of every brick and tile, all of which were built by government workers hand in hand with us from scratch

A key entrusted to the trust of coffee farmers in their officials. This trust comes from those evenings after work when I helped to look at the store, from the promise of 'I'll figure it out if you need anything' being fulfilled time and time again.

Later, when the county organized exhibitions in other places, Li Meiying was the first to think of Zhao Hua. These young people are very good at telling stories about local coffee. If Menglian Coffee wants to go out, it needs good ideas and new creativity from young people. To attract more young people to return to their hometowns, Menglian has created a "digital homeless community".

The development of Menglian coffee industry has also driven the employment of Wa women. More and more Wa women have fallen in love with the taste of coffee and have achieved income and wealth through it. Zhao Hua provides pictures

Nowadays, Zhao Hua's coffee business is steadily developing. Her coffee farm has over 20 employees, and many Wa aunties have been growing coffee for decades, hardly ever traveling far. Last year, Zhao Hua took them to Shangri La, Lijiang, and Dali, and they were particularly happy.

If Zhao Hua went from the planting end to the market, then Meng Lian and Guan Yong went from the market end to support the planting. Starting from the market, tell the land what to grow and what flavor to cultivate. After tasting freshly ground specialty coffee for the first time while working in Kunming, he returned to his hometown in 2017 and embarked on a reverse entrepreneurial path of "opening a store first, then building a roasting factory, followed by initial processing, and finally laying out planting".

Since opening my first coffee shop, I have been constantly exploring how the flavor of coffee comes about. Later, I researched rough processing, roasting, and finally planting

When Guan Yong was searching for a processing site, he discovered an abandoned rural primary school in the mountains that had been abandoned for many years. With the renovation, the basketball court has become a sunbathing area, classrooms have become processing workshops, and school buildings have become resorts. During the process, Li Meiying and her colleagues were very helpful. Connect water, electricity, and roads, watching as the mountain roads are repaired and the network cables are pulled up.

From infrastructure to technical training, from project funding to market integration, the services and assistance provided by the local government run through the entire process of official entrepreneurship. Guan Yong said, "The government can help us in our development, and in the future, we can also give back to our hometown when we develop well." His coffee plantation distributed 6.5 million yuan in fresh fruit payments during the 2022-2023 season, driving an increase in income for 286 people in 86 households, with an average increase of 75600 yuan per household.

My wife is responsible for online live streaming, my younger sister is responsible for estate operation, and each family member has their own responsibilities. From a person's passion, to a family's career, to the livelihood of a local people - this estate, transformed from an abandoned elementary school, connects personal dreams and rural revitalization.

From the older generation of cadres leading the masses to open platforms and grow coffee, to Li Meiying's generation of cadres running exhibitions, making recommendations, and building platforms, to the younger generation of Guan Yong and Zhao Hua returning home to start businesses and build brands - this is a relay that spans time.

To do every small thing solidly and well is the best interpretation, "Li Meiying understood the weight of the phrase" serving the people "in this way. There are no grandiose words, it's the wires pulled during repairs, the nights spent helping to look at shops after work, the journey of rushing around to recommend coffee, and the concrete efforts made by each person for each specific thing. These efforts converged and changed this coffee town.
