On the afternoon of August 22nd, in the workshop of Beixin Community, Hongtang Street, Jiangbei District, Ningbo, the last set of milk foam was finished, and several crooked but carefully pulled out "hearts" were left on the cup surface. This means that the first phase of the "Little Me" Special Needs Family Assisted Employment Workshop 2.0- Comprehensive Support Project for Career Exploration of Mentally Impaired Youth Coffee Vocational Skills Track, guided by the Jiangbei District Women's Federation and supported by Shanghai Senyu Culture Media Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Senyu Co., Ltd."), has ended. From the start of classes on July 18th to the end, in just over a month, this Shanghai cultural enterprise laid the first brick of career exploration for several families of mentally disabled teenagers with a solid set of coffee utensils and a classroom that allows for repeated mistakes.

A gap and a workshop for 'version upgrade'

For many young people with mental disabilities, once compulsory education ends, the road ahead is often narrow - there are fewer who can continue their education, fewer places to go during the day and have someone to take care of them, and the burden of caregiving is always on the shoulders of their families. It is precisely because of this gap that in 2025, under the guidance of the Women's Federation of Jiangbei District, the "Little Me" Workshop 1.0 version was first launched in Beixin Community, using exclusive space and community inclusiveness to hold 15 handicraft, experiential, and integrated activities for 10 households in the jurisdiction.

By 2026, the workshop will be upgraded to 2.0 and Senyu Corporation will join in, targeting the age group of 14 to 18 years old. With a more systematic and controllable small class training, we will try to connect "learning in the classroom" with "using in society" - coffee has become the first stop on this connecting road.

Three things added by Senyu Corporation: equipment, people, and permanent companionship

Senyu Corporation's investment this time is aimed at the three most lacking things for running a vocational course: equipment, faculty, and continuous companionship.

In terms of equipment, the company sends a complete set of practical tools such as coffee machines and bean grinders to the workshop to first fill in the hard gaps of "no one has anything"; In terms of teaching, we have invited a team of caring teachers from the Democratic League to design courses and provide classroom assistance, so that the teaching pace can follow the cognitive level of the children; In terms of companionship, corporate volunteers come to the scene every period, guarding the students and helping them complete a series of actions from grinding beans to pulling flowers.

Interestingly, Senyu Corporation is not using coffee for public welfare for the first time. Prior to this, the company had already partnered with the Shanghai Cultural and Creative Industry Promotion Association and the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation's "Coffee Always Warm" Coffee Public Welfare Special Fund to visit the Baoshan coffee producing area in Yunnan, and set its sights on the children of local coffee farmers. From the mountainous production areas in Yunnan to the community workshops in Ningbo, from the children of coffee farmers to intellectually disabled teenagers, a cup of coffee connects two groups of people who were originally unrelated to each other on the same public welfare line.

Three classes, completing a closed loop from raw to mature

According to the course records of the project team, this class is divided into three sessions, completing a closed loop of skill enlightenment. On July 18th, for the first time, the children touched their hands and went through the entire process of grinding beans, soaking filter paper, adding water, and extracting with the accompaniment of lecturers, special education teachers, parents, social workers, and volunteers; At the same time, in the "Clever Hand Cafe", coffee beans were pieced together into picture frames of fish, moon, and vase. Whoever gets stuck somewhere and who gets away with it, write them down in the 'Observation Record Form' for later use in adjusting classes.

The second time (August 1st), on the machine. Teacher Liu from Ningbo Democratic League demonstrated step by step the grinding gear, startup safety, and extraction temperature, while repeatedly emphasizing the safety of electricity and equipment. The children take turns getting started, adjusting parameters, waiting for the liquid to come out, pouring milk and blending on their own, and each person makes a latte. This time, there is an additional piece of "storage" content - after class, everyone will clean the machines together, collect tools, fold tablecloths, and sort them into categories. The meaning conveyed is very straightforward: come to the workshop, you are not just a guest being played with, but also the little master here.

On the closing day (August 22nd), we played coffee culture and handmade crafts. The lecturer opened the milk froth and gave a lecture: how to control the milk temperature, tilt the cup at 45 degrees, how to hold the steam stick, and then demonstrated how to pull a "heart". Looking back and forth, my hands were raised, but the children stared closely and put in the effort, and the sense of achievement of "what I made myself" was real. Continuing to make coasters, the wooden base, coffee beans, small beads, and hot melt gun stick together wildly, turning ordinary beans into thoughtful little works.

The most shocking scene happened after technology

The most touching part of the entire class is not the technology, but after the technology. On that occasion, cups of coffee were prepared by hand, and the children, who were usually taken care of by others, carried the cup they had made and walked towards their mother - the person who had been caught all along. For the first time, they handed back a hot cup to the closest person. We are not cultivating baristas, but providing them with an environment where they can practice repeatedly and are not afraid of making mistakes, "said the project team staff as they flipped through the first course's" Observation Record Form.

It used to be difficult for him to do a continuous task, but this time he was making coffee carefully from beginning to end, and when he left, he asked when he would come next time. "During the three classes, parents stood by the stage, watching their children do it themselves. Several people said that it's difficult to get children to complete a complete task in a row, but in these practical exercises, focus and confidence are visibly grown. Changes are not written in reports, they are visible and will be remembered by children themselves.

Next stop: From the workshop's workstation to the city's public spaces

Senyu Corporation stated that the company will continue to monitor the follow-up of this project and explore how to better integrate the special needs group into society, and continue to think about how the company can intervene and help. The second phase of the course with the direction of "learning more deeply and being useful" is already being planned; Following it, three integrated activities were also arranged to go out - setting up a "public welfare coffee corner" in the enterprise, holding an "open day" in the community, and opening a "public welfare pop-up store" in the public space of Shangcheng City, allowing children to apply what they have learned in real scenes and gradually expand their exposure.

For this group of 'little me', every time I hold the pot, grind the beans, and hand over a cup of coffee to a customer, it is a step towards the world. When practicing from the workshop's workstation to the open spaces of enterprises, communities, and cities, the skill is no longer a single action, but a reason to connect with people and be caught by society. What a cultural enterprise can do may not be big, but as this coffee class has shown - to connect these small accumulations step by step into a long road towards independence and integration, so that every "little me" can be seen, needed, and treated well according to their own pace.
