On June 25th, 2026, the second Yunnan Treasure Coffee Green Bean Competition (Yunnan Excellence Cup Pilot Competition) came to an end by the banks of Dianchi Lake. The traditional washed "Guixia" coffee green beans from Lincang Gengxia Manor won the championship with a score of 91.78, setting a new record for the score of Yunnan coffee competitions and delivering excellent results in this competition, which is known as the "Olympics of the coffee green bean world".
In the rigorous scoring system of the Excellence Cup, a score of 90 or above represents the "Excellence Level" and is the passport to the world's top coffee beans. In this competition, three Yunnan coffee beans scored over 90 points in the international blind test, and the top 20 scores were all above 87 points. Behind this achievement is the arduous journey of Yunnan coffee industry to emerge from a long trough and step onto the world stage, as well as a profound leap in quality, value, and discourse power for Yunnan coffee.
Low point reversal
Yunnan Coffee Accurately Changes Track
The news that the scores of three Yunnan beans have exceeded 90 points has excited distributors who sell Yunnan beans overseas, and Yunnan flavor is being recognized by more and more people, "said the person in charge of the 2026 Second Yunnan Treasure Coffee Green Bean Competition (Yunnan Excellence Cup Pilot Competition).
As one of the international judges of this competition, German judge Kiels sighed and said, "This is my first time in Yunnan after 15 years, and I have found that the quality of Yunnan coffee has improved rapidly. During the competition, I can clearly feel the level and flavor of Yunnan coffee. For example, in the fruit flavor, lemon, mango, etc. can be felt, and in the floral flavor, jasmine, etc. can be tasted. Through the competition, information about Yunnan coffee cultivation, processing, and other aspects can be introduced to judges and audiences from all over the world." At this moment, Yunnan coffee is highly regarded and recognized.
Although the cultivation history of Yunnan coffee can be traced back to 130 years ago, the Yunnan beans used to be the "invisible people" in the blending tanks of international giants, exported by ton as commodity beans. Due to the predominance of the disease resistant and high-yielding "Katim" hybrid series in planting varieties, and the pricing power firmly held by the New York Futures Exchange and giant purchasing departments, Yunnan coffee farmers have always been at the bottom of the value chain.
In 2019, the Dafengshou (Salad of assorted fresh vegetables) of Brazilian coffee led to a sharp drop in international futures prices, which was transmitted to Yunnan, causing the purchase price of raw beans to fall below the planting cost. Selling beans at a loss, so they decided not to pick them. Some farmers even cut down coffee trees and planted tea and corn instead. "The memories of Liao Xiugui, the first generation coffee farmer in Pu'er, express the despair at that time. The coffee industry also reached a crossroads in the vicious cycle at that time.
Although the low point was painful, it forced the determination to make a change and emerge from the dead. This counterattack began with precise lane changes in top-level design. In 2022, Yunnan will introduce the "Six Measures for Coffee" policy, which will clearly shift the track from commercialization to refinement.
As the tangible hand of policy exerts its power, the intangible hand of the market also brings in the east wind.
In the past five years, domestic coffee consumption has exploded, and brands such as Luckin Coffee and Manner need stable supply for expansion, completely breaking the original pricing rules. The selection of these brands has enabled Yunnan beans to no longer rely solely on exports, and the market structure has rapidly reversed, from 90% export six or seven years ago to 90% domestic sales today. The boost of domestic demand has enabled Yunnan beans to gain local bargaining power for the first time, with prices increasing threefold in three years, completely bidding farewell to the passive situation of "relying on the weather to eat".
Yunnan has the natural endowment of low latitude, high altitude, and large temperature difference between day and night, which is no different from the world-renowned specialty coffee production. Faced with market dividends, Yunnan provides a calm analysis: the real weaknesses lie in variety, management, and processing.
The turning point comes from reflection after the pain, and a top-down industrial transformation begins. With the "Six Measures for Coffee" policy as the core, the development logic of Yunnan's coffee industry hits the pain point directly. At the planting end, 1.05 million acres of high-quality suitable areas will be designated, low-end varieties will be eliminated, and high-quality seed sources such as "Guixia" and "Dere 132" will be promoted; At the processing end, funding subsidies will be provided to build an environmentally friendly fresh fruit processing center and promote technologies such as micro water processing; On the market side, we will make every effort to build regional public brands and encourage the integration of coffee and tourism.
The data is the most convincing, with Yunnan's coffee premium rate increasing from 8% in 2021 to 41.7% in 2025, and the deep processing rate jumping from 20% to 85%. In Xinzhai Village, Baoshan City, by promoting the harvesting of all red fruits and integrating water and fertilizer, the per capita disposable income of villagers has exceeded 40000 yuan. Coffee beans are no longer just agricultural products, but works that embody technology and craftsmanship.

Firmly moving forward on the path of refinement
Along the way, the market has never stopped testing the path of Yunnan coffee refinement.
On May 1, 2026, China officially implemented 100% tariff and zero tariff treatment for products exported from 53 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with China. Kenyan coffee, Ethiopian coffee and other African specialty agricultural products enter the Chinese market through a zero tariff channel. For a time, the topic of "zero tariff import of African coffee beans into China, what should Yunnan coffee do?" became a hot topic in the industry.
Industry insiders admit that if we were to turn back five or six years, the situation of Yunnan's coffee industry is indeed worrying in the face of the massive influx of coffee beans from African production areas. Nowadays, refinement has become the toughest "bulletproof vest" for Yunnan's coffee industry. By 2025, the output value of coffee agriculture in Yunnan Province will reach 8.39 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of over 70%. Behind the shift from "selling by ton" to "selling by cup" is a fundamental transformation in the industrial form - no longer exporting cheap raw materials, but exporting branded and refined value. The refinement practice of Yunnan coffee was well prepared to face the zero tariff policy even before it was implemented.
The Excellence Cup has set up pilot competitions in Yunnan for two consecutive years, allowing the standard system of international specialty coffee to be directly introduced into the production area, becoming an international passport for testing the quality of Yunnan coffee.
A truly good coffee is never afraid of competition, because it has an irreplaceable terroir, an irreplaceable flavor, and every solid effort made for refinement. In this competition, beans from all production areas in Yunnan have been shortlisted, demonstrating the confidence of diversified advantages.
Hu Faguang, a researcher at the Tropical and Subtropical Economic Crop Research Institute of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and director of Yunnan Key Coffee Laboratory, said, "This competition proves that Yunnan's premium coffee is recognized by the world. A score of over 90 points for three beans is a vivid footnote to Yunnan's coffee industry's path towards refinement
Objectively speaking, the counterattack of Yunnan's coffee industry has not yet been completed. The industry still faces problems such as unclear brand recognition and lack of unified public brand image. Yunnan has proven its ability to grow good coffee to the world, but how to make Yunnan coffee flavor a cultural symbol recognized by the world will be a more exciting competition on this path of boutique development.
