云南咖啡,凭什么越卖越贵?Why does Yunnan coffee become more expensive as it sells?

Yunnan, a poem written on the earth.
When travel is redefined, Yunnan is no longer a "scenic spot check-in spot", but a paradise for 3.9 million people to "live in". People have traveled the three winding lands and planted their ideals at the foot of the snow capped mountains; Pushing open the Dai bamboo tower, the evening breeze of the Lancang River brings creative inspiration; Swinging open a pot of Pu erh tea is like drinking down a whole primitive forest story
Here, travelers not only find poetry and distant places, but also find inner peace and belonging. Every cloud here is wrapped in the melodious melody of mountain songs, and every gust of wind hides the mellow aroma of tea and coffee. Everything here is interpreting - 'There is a kind of life called Yunnan'.
Yunnan Network will decode the deep logic of the phenomenon of living in Yunnan from multiple dimensions such as historical depth, ethnic culture, geographical wonders, ecological codes, and climate poetics, explore its resonance points across time and space, and talk about the unique charm, development stories, and future prospects of living in Yunnan.
Recently, three pieces of news about Yunnan coffee have gone viral: a traditional washed "Guixia" coffee from Lincang Gengxia Manor was sold to Luckin Coffee for 14000 yuan per kilogram, setting a new record for the auction of Chinese coffee beans; In the same competition (i.e. the 2026 2nd Yunnan Treasure Coffee Green Bean Competition<Yunnan Excellence Cup Pilot Competition>), three Yunnan beans won the internationally authoritative "Presidential Award" and entered the ranks of the world's top coffee brands; In addition, a company in Yunnan has won the Global Beauty Ingredient Innovation Award in New York, USA for extracting and developing plant cell fluid from coffee peels.
The story of Yunnan coffee is being rewritten by the world. The birth of three 90 cent beans is the result of years of accumulation and development in Yunnan's coffee industry. It marks that Yunnan coffee has obtained world-class certification in quality, opened up a global high-end channel in the market, strengthened the confidence of boutique transformation in the industry, and won international discourse power in culture. The award for coffee peel extract has achieved a breakthrough in high-value coffee by-products and filled the gap in the deep processing of the industry chain.
Data chart
From the auction house to the international tasting stage, from the beverage track to cross-border beauty ingredients, Yunnan Coffee is proving with its impressive achievements that 'Yunnan Coffee still represents China'. The continuous increase in its value is not accidental: it is the quality confidence that the premium rate has jumped from 8% to 41.7%, the advantage of the complete industry chain for the recycling of coffee products, and the brand heritage that empowers both germplasm research and development and cultural tourism integration... Nowadays, Yunnan coffee has already surpassed the single positioning of primary agricultural products and grown into an industry chain that fully unleashes value and unlimited potential.
Quality Innovation: Premium Rate Jumps from "8%" to "41.7%"
Once upon a time, Yunnan coffee was labeled as "cheap commercial beans". Coffee farmers can earn less than a thousand yuan by planting one acre of coffee; A large number of high-quality coffee beans are exported in the form of raw beans, labeled with other brands, and then sold back to China, with prices increasing several times or even dozens of times.

When did the change start? These data provide the answer. By 2025, the coffee planting area in Yunnan will reach 1.463 million mu, with an annual output of 138900 tons of green coffee beans and an agricultural output value of 8.66 billion yuan. The planting scale, output, and output value will all be ranked first in the country. The output value of the entire industry chain is approaching the hundred billion yuan mark. The coffee premium rate has increased from 8% in 2021 to 41.7%, and the deep processing rate has increased from 20% five years ago to 85%.
The leapfrog growth in the premium rate means that Yunnan coffee has completely bid farewell to the extensive mode of "winning by quantity" and entered the era of quality competition. In 2025, the first Yunnan Treasure Coffee Green Bean Competition received the best score of 89.96 points; After a year, three local coffee beans have surpassed the 90 point threshold. According to the international authoritative cup of excellence (CoE) evaluation criteria, a score of 87 is recognized as a premium coffee, and a score above 90 is a rare and excellent coffee bean, representing the top level of coffee in the world. The small difference of 0.32 points is due to the qualitative change of Yunnan coffee from "quality" to "excellence".
Baoshan Small Grain Coffee Information Picture
The most representative Yunnan Baoshan coffee, whose cultivation history can be traced back to the late 19th century, won the gold medal at the Eureka Expo in Brussels, Belgium in 1993. But over the next thirty years, the voice of Yunnan coffee in the international market was intermittent. Until recent years, a quality revolution covering the entire industry chain has quietly unfolded from Baoshan to Lincang, from Pu'er to Dehong - Yunnan has built the largest and most comprehensive coffee germplasm resource garden in China, independently cultivating 22 coffee varieties that are suitable for the local environment: independent intellectual property varieties such as "De Re" and "Yun Ka" have been rapidly promoted, and the planting area of high-quality varieties such as "Gui Xia" and "Tie Pi Ka" continues to break through.
By consolidating its foundation from the source of germplasm, Yunnan coffee has successively won multiple "national firsts" in the quality track and won awards in major world competitions.
Full chain value-added: making full use of resources and exploring new boundaries of value
If refinement is the "foundation" of Yunnan coffee, then extending the industrial chain is its "breakthrough path". In traditional perception, the value of coffee lies only in that single bean. But Yunnan people have proven through practice that coffee is a treasure from head to toe.
The most representative one is undoubtedly Yunnan coffee peel extract, which won the International Beauty Ingredients Award on the other side of the ocean. This honor stems from a traceability survey conducted by the R&D team in the Pu'er coffee production area in Yunnan. At that time, it was the end of the coffee harvest season, and a large amount of peeled coffee peels were piled up in the corners of the estate, gradually fermenting and emitting a sour taste. For growers, these fruit peels are by-products that require additional payment for transportation. But according to professional testing, coffee peels are rich in active ingredients such as polyphenols and caffeine, which have good antioxidant potential.
Discovering value is just the first step. The polyphenols, caffeine, and other components in coffee peels are highly sensitive to temperature. After continuous exploration, Yunnan Xicao Resources Development Co., Ltd. has innovatively developed a small molecule water extraction technology, which replaces traditional organic solvents with treated natural plant water and completes extraction under mild conditions. The breakthrough in this key issue has truly given the discarded coffee peels the possibility to enter the high-end cosmetics raw material market.

In fact, the development and utilization of coffee by-products is no longer an isolated case in Yunnan. The research team of coffee by-products at Yunnan Agricultural University has released multiple products, including fruit peel tea drinks and fruit peel wine, focusing on coffee skin, fruit residue, and other related areas. From fruit peel tea to fruit peel wine, from beauty ingredients to biological extracts, every part of coffee is being fully utilized. This is not only a "zero waste" green practice, but also a brand new value growth curve. When the skin of a coffee bean can win a big prize on the international stage, the premium space of Yunnan coffee is no longer limited to just one cup of beverage.
Brand cultivation: from "planting beans" to "planting brands"
In 2016, Zhu Hong, who had been wandering outside for 20 years, returned to Bangdong Township, Linxiang District, Lincang City and transferred more than 40 acres of land to try coffee cultivation. After ten years of exploration, the cooperative he led has grown from over 70 households to over 1300 households today. In 2026, the washed "Guixia" green beans submitted by the Songfeng Coffee Farmers' Professional Cooperative, where he works, achieved a high score of 90.28, winning the third place in the competition and the "Presidential Award". The achievement of this result marks that Linxiang Coffee has officially entered the top tier of global boutique coffee.

In Yunnan, Zhu Hong's story is not an isolated case. Most members of the championship team of Gengxia Manor graduated from Yunnan Agricultural University, the first university in China to offer a major in coffee science and engineering. From Baoshan to Lincang, from Pu'er to Dehong, batches of "new coffee farmers" are using decades or even decades of persistence to transform Yunnan coffee from "growing out" to "growing a brand out".
In terms of policies, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and other departments issued a notice in August 2022 on several policy measures to promote the improvement of coffee quality rate and deep processing rate, clarifying six key directions including good varieties and methods, development of deep processing, creation of cloud coffee brand, and construction of boutique estates, fully supporting Yunnan coffee to move towards branding and industrialization.

Nowadays, the four major deep processing clusters of Baoshan, Kunming, Pu'er, and Dehong have taken shape. In 2025, Yunnan coffee will be included in the first batch of national cultivation lists for traditional advantageous food production areas; In 2026, Yunnan proposed to focus on building a new model of "coffee tourism" integration with boutique coffee estates as carriers. Baoshan Xinzhai Village has built a boutique coffee plantation, receiving an average of 200000 tourists per year. By 2025, the coffee agriculture output value will reach 250 million yuan, and the per capita income of villagers will exceed 40000 yuan.
The path taken by Yunnan coffee, from "selling by ton" to "selling by cup", from "exporting raw materials" to "expanding its brand overseas", is a microcosm of China's agricultural transformation from scale expansion to quality revolution.
The coffee beans priced at 14000 yuan per kilogram, with an international rating of over 90 points, and a global beauty ingredient award - behind these "shining moments" is an industry that has been dormant and accumulated for decades. The story of Yunnan coffee tells us that the upgrading of the agricultural industry is never achieved overnight. It requires continuous research and development of germplasm resources, continuous breakthroughs in processing technology, long-term cultivation of market brands, and more importantly, the persistence and innovation of generation after generation of "new farmers".
As Gary Urrutia, the representative of ACE events and the general manager of CoE events, said, China currently ranks among the top ten global producers of Arabica coffee, and the time is ripe for Chinese coffee to enter the world stage. Based on the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Yunnan coffee is taking quality as the edge, industry as the wing, and brand as the sail to go abroad and reach the top of excellence on the world coffee stage.
